The device has an external rear view mirror (10) provided with a camera (3) and a mirror element (2). An evaluating unit evaluates an image while reproducing detection area lying behind and adjacent to a motor vehicle in a driving direction, where the image is detected using the camera. The evaluating unit produces control data depending on determined characteristics and/or determined reproduction, and a fading unit fades the mirror element depending on the control data. A display unit e.g. LCD, displays area of the image to a driver. An independent claim is also included for a method for fading a mirror element of a motor vehicle.
