PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a titanium-based material for inexpensively forming a carbon film with high adhesion strength, and to provide a method for producing the material.

SOLUTION: The method of producing a titanium-based material includes a step of: forming a rolling-altered layer 12 that includes titanium carbide on a surface of the base material 11 by rolling a titanium base material 11 via rolling oil that includes carbon; and depositing a carbon film on the surface on which the rolling-altered layer has been formed.
