<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alkyl-etherified cellulose (derivative) which is hardly discolored. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing an alkyl-etherified cellulose (derivative) (E) includes reacting a cellulose (derivative) (A) and an alkylation agent (B) in the presence of an alkali (C) and a quaternary ammonium salt-based phase transfer catalyst (D), wherein the quaternary ammonium salt has a total amine value of≤0.5 mgKOH/g. Three substituents constituting a cation of the (D) are each a 1-22C straight or branched aliphatic hydrocarbon group and one remaining substituent is an 8-22C straight or branched aliphatic hydrocarbon group or a 7-22C arylalkyl or arylalkenyl group.
