Disclosed is a mobile communication system which has a cooperative communication mode in which a plurality of base stations cooperatively perform wireless communication with a mobile terminal and a non-cooperative communication mode in which the base stations perform the wireless communication with the mobile terminal while the base stations do not cooperate with other base stations. The wireless communication is performed by selective use of the cooperative communication mode or the non-cooperative communication mode. Properly selecting the cooperative communication in which the base stations cooperatively perform the wireless communication with the mobile terminal or the non-cooperative communication in which the base stations perform the wireless communication with the mobile terminal while the base stations do not cooperate with other base stations, the mobile communication system can exert performance thereof in accordance with situation.
