PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a return testing device of a shock absorber for an elevator, dispensing with a shortcircuit of a safety device, capable of testing in an ordinary travel range, being not a long size material and not combustibles, simple in attachment-detachment, and easy in handling. SOLUTION: This return testing device 14 of the shock absorber for the elevator is provided with a car 1 of the elevator, a counterweight 3, a main rope 7 for mutually liftably moving both in the inverse direction by suspending the car and the counterweight, and a balance rope 12 connected between a lower part of the car and a lower part of the counterweight and compensating for a weight unbalance of the main rope caused by the lifting movement of the car, and has an installation part 17 detachably installed on the balance rope in a return test of the shock absorber 11, a compression piece 16 arranged in the installation part and compressing the shock absorber from above by lowering in this ordinary travel range in the return test of the shock absorber, and an installing means 19 for detachably installing the installation part on the balance rope.
