PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display capable of performing area active drive, where by taking into in consideration the emitted light from ambient light sources, correct gradation can be displayed, while suppressing power consumption. SOLUTION: A lighting luminance calculating section 10 sets, when the luminance of a light source LS(x, y) is insufficient for illuminating a certain position (x, y), with the required illuminance D(x, y) calculated by a required illuminance calculation section 150 so as to compensate for the shortfall in illuminance (rest) by the illuminance of ambient light sources LS(x+p, y+q) and outputs the light. Thus, as compared to the configuration where the luminance of each light source is increased uniformly, power consumption can be suppressed, shortage in the illuminance (rest) is compensated for, and correct gradation can be displayed.
