The method involves generating a characterizing sound signal (12a) by a sound generator (14), and transmitting a waveform of the signal from the generator to an object (10). Sound profiles are generated at different points at which the object is held, and a sound signal (12) different from the characterizing sound signal is received at the different points. The waveform of the received sound signal for each point is stored, where the determination of a position of the object takes place through comparison of the received sound signal with the sound profiles. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for determining position of an object.
