<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical information reader for shortening the time for reading optical information, and for preventing the position of the optical information from being erroneously recognized even when there is a contrast pattern that may cause noise in the periphery of the optical information. <P>SOLUTION: A preprocessing circuit 32 reduces an image of optical information recorded in a dark color (black), and converts the image into a reduced image pained out in the dark color. Thus, the optical information is changed to a rectangular dark-colored object, while a wiring pattern included in the original image does not show any rectangular shape.
