<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biometric device with convenience and security. <P>SOLUTION: (1) A fingerprint sensor 111 reads the fingerprint data of a user, and a fingerprint authentication device 200 collates read fingerprint data 101 with registration data. When the collation rate (matching rate) of the read fingerprint data 101 with the registration data is equal to or more than an authentication threshold, the fingerprint authentication device 200 authenticates that the user is a legal user. (2) When the collation rate is less than an authentication threshold, the fingerprint authentication device 200 determines the number of digits "N" of a password whose input has been requested according to the collation rate. The number of digits "N" whose input has been requested becomes smaller according as the collation rate is closer to the authentication threshold. A user inputs leading N digits of the password to a touch panel 112, and the fingerprint authentication device 200 compares an input password 102 with the leading N digits of the registration password.
