PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide carbon steel excellent in spheroidizing processability, which is suitable for a machine structure member, a power transmission member for automobiles, a bearing and a tool or the like. SOLUTION: The carbon steel contains, by mass%, 0.40 to 1.80% C, 0.001 to 1.0% B, one or more kinds of≤2.0% Cr,≤1.0% Mo,≤0.5% V, 0.5% Nb when necessary, wherein content (mass%) of B and C satisfies, according to the content of B (mass%), formula; C≥1.94-B×514 (0.001≤B≤0.003) or formula; C≥0.467-B×0.053 (0.003<B≤1.0), (where, B and C show the content (mass%) in each formula).
