An improved airbag protection system for a vehicle has a recess in the vehicle interior trim to hold a folded airbag and with a uniform thickness cover to form part of the trim. The cover is displaced to one side as the airbag is inflated, with a controlled expansion rate towards the seat occupant. The design generates no fragments of cover which could cause injury. The design can be applied to dashboard mounted airbags as well as for side impact protection airbags. The edges of the airbag are folded to produce a compact pack.
