The method involves using transmitting and receiving side network elements (5a, 6a) e.g. multimedia messaging service (MMS) relays/servers, situated in a domain of one or two MMS providers. Information regarding readiness of a sender to accept costs for a reply message from the recipient is transmitted and/or received by a transmitting application (1a), a receiving application (2a) and the network elements for a maximum allowable parameter for the reply message. A new header field with a hexadecimal coding of a field name is used in wireless application protocol (WAP) messages (N1a-N7a, N10a). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a network element provided in a domain of a service provider (2) a subscriber unit for communication in a communication network (3) a software program comprising instructions for performing a method for transmitting a message via a communication network from a transmitting application to a receiving application.
