PURPOSE: A washing machine is provided to prevent the abrasion due to the collision of a drum and a tub. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine comprises a cabinet, a drum(30), a sensor member, and a controller. The cabinet forms the outer frame. A tub is connected directly to at least one of the front, side and rear sides in the cabinet and receives the water. The drum is rotatably connected to the inside of the tub(20) and holds the laundry. The sensor member is installed on at least one of the drum and the tub and senses the distance between the drum and the tub. The controller controls the drum to prevent the collision with the tub due to the relative movement using the sensing value sensed through the sensor member when the drum rotates at a high speed.
