Disclosed is a rapidly-dissolving oral dosage pharmaceutical composition comprising drospirenone or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof, a surfactant and at least one pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein the drospirenone is in particulate form and has a surface area of less than 10,000 cm2/g (greater than 2% of drospirenone particles have a diameter of at least 30 micrometers) and wherein when said excipient is a binder it is selected from the group consisting of corn starch and polyvinylpyrrolidone. The composition may further comprise ethinyl estradiol. This rapidly-dissolving oral dosage pharmaceutical composition or oral dosage medicament is suitable for inhibiting ovulation in a mammal and is effective for oral contraception in a human female.
