The method involves controlling an ultrasonic sensor (10) to emit an ultrasonic wave (20) having a final frequency less than an initial frequency, when a part of a signal comprises an echo with an amplitude less than a determined threshold value. The part of the signal is analyzed and the sensor is controlled in a recurrent manner until obtaining an echo having an amplitude higher than the threshold value. The sensor is utilized to calculate a level of a product (14) in a container (12) when the part of the signal comprises the echo with the amplitude higher than the threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a sensor comprising a controller.
