Use of gangliosides for reducing harmful oral bacteria while promoting beneficial oral bacteria

Disclosed is the use of a ganglioside for improving oral flora, that is, reducing harmful bacteria while leaving unaffected or promoting the growth of neutral and beneficial bacteria. Preferred gangliosides are ganglioside GD3 and ganglioside GM3. This treatment is beneficial for periodontal diseases, oral decay, halitosis, and oral hygiene. The gangliosides may be isolated from milk products.
