An open storage bag 100 comprises two flexible sidewalls 102, 104 with their first side edges 110, second parallel side edges 112 and bottom edges 114 joined to provide an interior volume 106. Both side walls 102, 104 have closure strips 126, 128 attached next to the opening. A separator 132/134 with a one-way valve 130 in the centre is fixed to one sidewall 102. The separator 132/134 can be adjusted between a collapsed position where the position of the separator 132/134 and the valve 130 coincide with that of the sidewall 102 to which they are attached, and an expanded position where the expanded separator 132/134 raises the valve 130 away from the sidewall 102. The separator 132/134 removes fluid from the air evacuated from the interior volume 106 of the bag 100 through the valve 130 by allowing the fluid to separate under the effect of gravity and return to the interior volume 106 of the bag 100. This effect prevents the evacuation of fluid from the bag that may contaminate the valve 130 or the outer surface of the bag 100.
