PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical access portal device assembled with a sponge material used during minimally invasive surgical procedures. SOLUTION: The surgical access portal includes: a seal housing and a sleeve mounted to the sleeve housing having an internal longitudinal passage adapted to provide access to underlying tissue; a seal part which has an opening for reception and passage of a surgical instrument in a substantially sealed relation and is in mechanical cooperation with an inner wall of the seal housing; and a sponge material which is disposed distally of the seal part and is adapted to absorb fluids that enter the seal housing.
