An internal combustion engine (1) comprises a low-pressure supercharger (LTC) including a low-pressure compressor wheel (54) mounted in an intake passage (20) and a low-pressure turbine wheel (64) mounted in an exhaust passage (30) and connected to the wheel (54), and a high-pressure supercharger (HTC) including a high-pressure compressor wheel (55) mounted in the intake passage (20) and a high-pressure turbine wheel (65) mounted in the exhaust passage (30) and connected to the wheel (55). In the space formed between a low-pressure compressor housing portion (51) enclosing the low-pressure compressor wheel (54) and a low-pressure turbine housing portion (61) enclosing the low-pressure turbine wheel (64), both a portion of a high-pressure compressor housing portion (52) enclosing the high-pressure compressor wheel (55) and a portion of a high-pressure turbine housing (62) enclosing the high-pressure turbine wheel (65) are positioned.
