PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine having a function for suppressing valve stamping and a function for fixing a valve timing and capable of suppressing complication of a structure for achieving these functions. SOLUTION: This variable valve gear includes a valve timing variable mechanism 30 for changing the valve timing by operating a phase of relative rotation of a housing rotor 31 and a vane rotor 35, and a restriction mechanism 4 for restricting the range of the relative rotation. The restricting mechanism 4 includes a restriction pin 60 moving between a storage position in which the pin 60 is stored in a vane rotor 35, and first and second projection positions in which the pin 60 is projected from the rotor 35, and a lock hole 41 and a restriction groove 51 provided in the housing rotor 31, in which the restriction pin 60 is fitted at the first and second projection positions, respectively. When the restriction pin 60 is fitted in the lock hole 41, the relative rotational phase is fixed, and when the restriction pin 60 is fitted in the restriction groove 51, the range of the relative rotation is restricted.
