PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a determination method with which propriety of a crystal vibrator can be determined in a state where the crystal vibrator is actually sealed in a package, in a crystal oscillator where the crystal vibrator and an IC circuit for oscillating the crystal vibrator are sealed in the package so as not to expose outside wiring connecting the crystal vibrator and the IC circuit with each other. SOLUTION: A propriety determining method for a crystal vibrator uses a crystal oscillator 10 in which a crystal vibrator 1 to be determined and an IC circuit 2 for oscillating the crystal vibrator are sealed in a package so as not to expose outside wiring connecting the crystal vibrator and the IC circuit 2 with each other, and which comprises an input terminal IN to which an external signal is inputted and includes a means for varying a negative resistance value of the IC circuit 2 in accordance with a control signal from the outside. Oscillation output is monitored while varying the negative resistance value, a serial resonance resistance value of the crystal vibrator is calculated based on the negative resistance value in stopping oscillation and/or in starting oscillation, and propriety of the crystal vibrator is determined based on a relationship between the serial resonance resistance value and the negative resistance value which was set in IC circuit design.
