During the low load operation and intermediate load operation of an engine, a series of combustion patterns consisting of initial low-temperature combustion, premixture combustion, and diffusion combustion are performed. Initial low-temperature combustion is carried out by performing micro-fuel injection while performing an operation for lowering the encounter rate of oxygen and fuel spray in a cylinder. Consequently, production of NOx is limited. While heat generation rate is kept low. Premixture combustion is carried out by receiving heat quantity from the initial low-temperature combustion and generation of smoke is limited. Diffusion combustion is carried out when fuel passes through the combustion field of the premixture combustion, and, when the fuel-injection timing is controlled, timing for maximizing heat generation rate can be regulated properly in the series of combustion patterns. Consequently, production of NOx and production of smoke can be controlled, and at the same time a requested torque is ensured. |
