PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical apparatus for rear projector which efficiently displays a large image and is made thinner, and to provide a rear projector. SOLUTION: The optical apparatus for rear projector includes: a housing 1a; a transmission type screen 10 mounted on the front face of the housing 1a; an optical member 12 which reflects or refracts the light projected by a projector unit 11 either to upper side or lower side; a first mirror 13 whose reflection face is disposed being directed to the other side of either upper side or lower side and which reflects the light from the optical member 12; and a second mirror 14 which reflects the light reflected on the first mirror 13 and allows the light to make incident on the back face of the screen 10, wherein the optical member 12 reflects or refracts the light from the projector unit 11 toward the first mirror 13 so that the light may be reflected in a line region along the width direction of the screen 10 on the reflection face of the first mirror 13.
