PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of displaying bright images while securing safety. SOLUTION: The image display device includes: a laser beam source device; a modulator for modulating light emitted from the laser beam source device matched with an effective display period T<SB>1</SB>shorter than a reference display period T<SB>0</SB>determined by a refresh rate of input images; and a scanning optical system for scanning the light modulated by the modulator on a surface to be scanned matched with the effective display period T<SB>1</SB>. The output P<SB>1</SB>of the light emitted from the scanning optical system is set on the basis of the ratio between the reference display period T<SB>0</SB>and the effective display period T<SB>1</SB>.
