PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical cable where, even if cutting refuse generated in the branching work or the like of the optical cable is scattered in an outdoor atmosphere, it is easily decomposed in a natural environment and an adverse influence on the environment is reduced. SOLUTION: The optical cable includes a cable core composed of a plurality of coated optical fibers 4, 14, a protective member covering the outer side of the cable core, and jackets 6, 16 covering the outer side of the protective member, and the protective member comprises a biodegradable material. As the biodegradable material, non-wood vegetable natural fiber is used, and it is preferable to use kenaf or bagasse. Also, the protective member is an upper winding tape 6 wound around the outer periphery of a slot in a slot type optical cable 1, and the protective member is the yarn of a buffer layer 16 filled between a pipe-like jacket and an optical fiber unit in a non-slot type optical cable 11.
