PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel pipe pile for use in civil engineering and construction fields such as a foundation of a harbor structure or a bridge and a building foundation; and to provide a method for constructing the steel pipe pile. SOLUTION: A leading end of the hollow steel pipe pile having the leading end opened is provided with tapered outer and inner peripheral surfaces 2 and 3 which are formed by gradually reducing the diameters of outer and inner peripheral surfaces toward the leading end, respectively. The leading end of the steel pipe pile is equipped with a drilling bit 6. The ratio between the length (H1) of a tapered portion 4 in the longitudinal direction of the pile and an outside diameter (D1) of the pile in a constant part, having a fixed outside diameter, of the steel pipe pile 1 is in the range of 0.3-5.5. The ratio (D2/D1) of an outside diameter D2 of the leading end of the steel pipe pile to the outside diameter (D1) of the pile in the constant part, having the fixed outside diameter, of the steel pipe pile 1 is in the range of 0.60-0.95. The steel pipe pile 1 is rotatively jacked into ground containing hard ground through a rotary pile jacking method which applies a rotational force and a push-in force to the steel pipe pile.
