PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a portable small-size hydrogen generator, which generates hydrogen from hydrocarbons without generating CO<SB>2</SB>and can be mounted on a small automobile. SOLUTION: The hydrogen generator includes: a tubular decomposition furnace in a form of a single pipe; a heat-resistant, heat-insulating material fitted inside the pipe; and a heating cylinder to be heated by air-hydrogen flame, disposed at the center inside the material, and the furnace is heated from the inside by a hydrogen burner. Hydrocarbons are introduced into a gap between the insulating material and the heating cylinder and pyrolyzed to obtain hydrogen and carbon, which are cooled and filtered to remove dust to obtain crude hydrogen.
