Provided are a display device and a display control method capable of reducing the feeling of visual strangeness given to users. A display device includes a display panel (1) that displays images; a backlight unit (3) disposed at the rear side of the display panel (1) and including a plurality of light sources in each of a plurality of areas defined by partitioning the display panel (1); an area feature amount detecting unit (6) that detects a feature amount of an image in each partitioned area; a full-screen feature amount detecting unit (5) that detects a feature amount of an image on the entire display panel; an area brightness determining unit (7) that determines brightness levels of the light sources in each area on the basis of the detected feature amount of the image in each area and the detected feature amount of the image on the entire display panel; and a backlight driving unit (4) that drives the light sources such that the light sources emit light at the determined brightness levels.
