PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zoom lens having a wide viewing angle, and having high optical performance over the whole zooming range, and to obtain an imaging apparatus including the zoom lens. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes in order from an object side to an image side: a first lens group having negative refractive power; a second lens group having positive refractive power; a third lens group having negative refractive power; a fourth lens group having positive refractive power; a fifth lens group having negative refractive power; and a sixth lens group having positive refractive power; wherein zooming is performed by varying distances between the respective lens groups, and provided that focal lengths of the third lens group, the fifth lens group and the sixth lens group are denoted as f3, f5 and f6, respectively, and the focal length of the whole system at a wide angle end is denoted as fw, the respective focal lengths are appropriately set.
