PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head-mounted type display device capable of achieving high image quality of a displayed image by performing optical modulation through two stages using two optical modulation elements for luminance modulation and for color modulation, and also, capable of achieving miniaturization of the whole imaging optical system including the optical modulation elements and an imaging optical system. SOLUTION: The head-mounted type display device 1 includes: the first optical modulation element 20 for color modulation; the second optical modulation element 30 for luminance modulation; a synthesizing optical system 40 for imaging the modulated light which has been modulated by the first optical modulation element 20 on the second optical modulation element 30; and the imaging optical system 50 for imaging the modulated light whose luminance has been modulated by the second optical modulation element 30 on the eyes of an observer 60. A polarized beam splitter 41 is used as the synthesizing optical system, the first optical modulation element 20 is disposed above the light-incident surface 44 of the polarized beam splitter 41, the second optical modulation element 30 is disposed on the first light exit surface 45 of the polarized beam splitter, and the imaging optical system 50 is disposed on the second light exit surface 46 of the polarized beam splitter.
