PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an impact printer performing printing at an appropriate print density without wasteful output by establishing a print output matched to the degree of consumption of an ink ribbon, and a print density control method thereof. SOLUTION: The impact printer 1 includes an optical reader 130 for optically reading a printing surface of a passbook P on a passbook carrying path 110 for carrying the passbook P, and a printhead 170 for printing to the printing surface of the passbook P guided onto the passbook carrying path 110 through an ink ribbon 172. The printer includes a print density adjustment function of comparing the print density of a first printed line read by the optical reader 130 with a reference print density to determine a gray level, and controlling the subsequent print outputs to be printed by the printhead 170 based on the gray level to adjust the print density.
