PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a keratin softener capable of removing, without difficulty, thickened, hardened, cracked keratin resulting from gradual, thick accumulation of old keratin on heel etc. and is capable of improving such heel into soft, smooth heel etc. within a short period of time. SOLUTION: The keratin softener is an aqueous solution containingα-amino acid and a bivalent iron salt of a strong acid or an external preparation or a cosmetic containing the aqueous solution. The keratin softener is capable of softening and smoothing the keratin when applied to the heel covered by old, thickened, cracked skin. Theα-amino acid is at least one chosen from glycine, alanine, serine, leucine, isoleucine, cysteine, valine, histidine and proline, and the ferric salt of the strong acid is ferric chloride.
