PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound suitable for a light-absorbing agent for an optical filter, and to provide an optical filter comprising the compound. SOLUTION: The cyanine compound represented by formula (I) is useful as a light-absorbing agent for a light having a wavelength of 750-1,100 nm, particularly 800-900 nm. The cyanine compound is excellent in light fastness and also excellent in heat resistance and moist heat resistance. The optical filter comprising the compound is suitably employed for enhancement of display qualities of an image display device, prevention of reflection of external light and prevention of erroneous operation of an infrared remote control.
