PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for diagnosing an abnormality of a rotary shaft, which receives an elastic wave signal accompanying an occurrence and growth of a crack in the rotary shaft without attenuating the signal. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes at least one or more AE sensors 12 detecting an elastic wave occurring at a spindle 4; an analytical means 16 connected to the AE sensor 12 via a cable and diagnosing the abnormality based on a signal of the AE sensor 12; and a body of rotation 11 filled with a fluid f, abutted against a peripheral surface of the spindle 4, and rotatable along with rotation of the spindle 4, the AE sensor 12 being at least partly immersed in the fluid f.
