Cleaning equipment for processing liquids containing organic matter involves contacting the equipment with a solution of a periodate compound, where one of the following steps is performed, (A) where the solution has a pH value of = 6, the method further involves contacting the equipment with a solution having a pH value of >= 6; and (B) where a solution of a periodate is used at a pH value of >= 6, the method involves an additional oxidizing agent such as peroxydisulphate, hydrogen peroxide or a peracid. |
