The compactor (10) has a rotating mass unit arranged eccentrically relative to a drive shaft for generating an impact effect, where the eccentricity and impact frequency of the rotating mass unit in operation of the compactor are target variable. The eccentricity in a discrete operating mode (X1) is greater than in another discrete operating mode (X2) and a third discrete operating mode (X3). The eccentricity is equal in the latter and the third mode, and the impact frequency in the latter operating mode is smaller than in the third operating mode. An optical display device comprises LED. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a mounted compactor.
