The communication between at least one elevator (A) and a remote central control station (Z) uses a communication network (14-14"). At least one initial signal from the elevator communication unit (13) is received though a signal network (12-12'") and a second signal from it passes through the communication network to a computer (15) at the remote control. The communication connection remains permanently open. The communication network is a virtual private network (VPN) using tunnel technology.
