Control of the fresh air and burnt gases introduced into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine

The system has an external partial exhaust gas recirculation loop (17) partially recirculating exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine (1). A cylinder (2) comprises an intake valve (3) and an exhaust valve (4) controlled by a variable distribution actuator (50). A fresh air flow regulating module (32) regulates flow of fresh air admitted in the engine. A control module (33) controls distribution of the gas to control introduction of mass of partially recycled exhaust gas in the cylinder, a residual waste gas rate from residual waste gas rate input setpoints and fresh air flow rate. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a drive train of a motor vehicle with partial recirculation of exhaust gas.
