The tendency of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil to deteriorate as the result of oxidation is reduced by using, in contact with the lubricating oil in an I.C. engine, a crank case drain plug bearing on its inner end metallic sodium, potassium, lithium or calcium or alloys of such metals other than an alloy of sodium and lead-tin solder. Alloys referred to are sodium amalgam and alloys of sodium and cadmium, sodium and tin and calcium and silver. At least 1/4 per cent of the metal or alloy based on the weight of oil treated may be used. It is thought that the presence of the metals or alloys in contact with the oil stabilizes the hydroperoxides formed on oxidation of the oil, or decomposes these hydroperoxides to liberate free oxygen.
|
