The method involves applying a predetermined initial current to a battery, where the initial current is greater than one third of a nominal capacity of the battery. A regulation current is applied to the battery such that the voltage at terminals of the battery is approximately equal to a predetermined threshold voltage. A predetermined threshold current is applied to the battery when the regulation current is equal to the threshold current. An independent claim is also included for a system for charging a battery.
