PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a banaba extract having taste quality objectively guaranteed to be equal to or superior to a specific level by an analytic instrument and also effective for activating LOX-1 antagonist action. SOLUTION: The banaba extract is characterized by the following procedure. A chromatographic instrument containing 1 mL of a column "HiTrap DEAE FF" (product of GE Healthcare) is loaded with 0.5 mg of the banaba extract, a chromatogram is taken under a condition of 50 mM of HEPES (pH 8.0) as a solvent, 0-1 M of NaCl, 20 column volume of gradient and 1 mL/min of the flow rate, and the banaba extract has an A/B ratio of≤20%, wherein A is the area of peak A at 230 nm obtained from a straightly passed fraction and B is the area of peak B having a largest peak area among peaks of 230 nm at NaCl concentration of 0.1-0.3 M or thereabout.
