PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and a recording method capable of restraining surely and properly density from being fluctuated in a unit area even if recording positions are shifted in a plurality of recording scans in the case of executing multipath recording to output an image free from irregular density, and capable of outputting such an image of high quality even in any of various recording modes different in multipath numbers. SOLUTION: One of the recording modes is selected out of the plurality of recording modes including the first recording mode and the second recording mode according to a kind of a recording medium and a required recording speed. The recording is executed at the reduced multipath number in the first recording mode using a mask pattern set to make a ratio recorded with duplicated dots with a central path space therebetween higher than a ratio recorded with duplicated dots with the other path space therebetween. The recording is executed at the large multipath number in the second recording mode using a dot arrangement pattern to record a prescribed number of dots by the different recording scan in an adjacent area even in a high-light area.
