PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently separate an image into a set of planes by utilizing the advantage of an MRC representation. SOLUTION: A system for separating an image signal into a set of image planes is provided with a minimum/maximum module, a dynamic threshold module and a separation module. The minimum/maximum module receives an image signal, and searches for minimum and maximum values within at least one window centered on a current pixel in the image signal. The dynamic threshold module computes respective indexes representing the distance and direction of the current pixel with respect to their threshold planes for the window on the basis of the minimum and maximum values received from the minimum/maximum module and the current pixel, and outputs a control signal on the basis of the indexes. The separation module separates the image signal into a set of image planes according to the control signal by including the representation of the current pixel in at least one of the image planes.
