PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new reflection optical element that is manufactured simply and at low cost by a chemical process and has a high yield. SOLUTION: When a metal structure in which a fine projected line having diameter of a nano meter order is erected like a brush is soaked in an electrolytic solution enclosed between a light transmissible upper substrate and a light transmissible lower substrate, and when a voltage is applied to the electrolytic solution, the three dimensional structure of the fine projected line is changed in response to the transition in the bias direction of the application of the voltage and the reflection characteristics of the metal structure are changed with high responsiveness, according the change of the fine projected line. A reflection type display and an electronic paper, having a new color developing mechanism by using the metal structure as the reflection optical element are provided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
