PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an unsaturated polyester resin which has excellent mechanical properties such as strength or impact resistance and excellent durabilities such as water resistance as a binder resin for fiber-reinforced articles and which is obtained by using a raw material derived from biomass resources causing no effect on the global warming even if they are subjected to an incineration treatment. SOLUTION: The unsaturated polyester resin is obtained by dissolving 100 pts.wt of an unsaturated polyester in 20-120 pts.wt of a polymerizable monomer. In the unsaturated polyester, acid components comprise an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, a monocarboxylic acid and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and alcohol components comprise a polyhydric alcohol having a valency of 3 or higher and a divalent alcohol, wherein the molar ratio of the monocarboxylic to the acid components is 0.15-0.65, and the molar ratio of the polyhydric alcohol having a valency of 3 or higher to the alcohol components is 0.1-0.75.
