PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-POS device suitable for a small-scaled store which is managed by few staff members such as a convenience store, and also to provide a method for operating this self-POS device. SOLUTION: The self-POS 10 is configured of a body part 20 having a scanner 21 for scanning the bar code of merchandise, a camera 22, and a casing 23; and a control part 30 with a display 31, wherein the bar code of the merchandise arranged in front of the body part 20 is read by the scanner 21, and the data of the three-dimensional image of the merchandise photographed by the camera 22 are stored so as to be associated with the bar code of the merchandise, and a basic graphic obtained by extracting the characteristic points of the merchandise 40 corresponding to the bar code is compared with the stored three-dimensional image so that their correlation value is calculated, and the difference or the identity of the merchandise 40 is determined from the correlation value.
