PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus and a method of determining the contact state, capable of measuring the contact state such as inclination to a diagnostic region of an ultrasonic probe, and capable of obtaining a high-quality echo image without deteriorating the diagnostic capability. SOLUTION: The ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus includes the ultrasonic probe for ultrasonic diagnosis for transmitting ultrasonic waves from a contact surface to the diagnostic region and receiving the ultrasonic echo from the diagnostic region; an image generating part for generating the ultrasonic echo image of the diagnostic region based on the ultrasonic echo; and a display part for displaying the generated ultrasonic echo image. The ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus further includes a first pressure measuring means for measuring a first contact pressure on the diagnostic region at a first position on the contact surface; a second pressure measuring means for measuring a second contact pressure on the diagnostic region at a second position different than the first position on the contact surface; and an abnormality determining means for determining an abnormality if the difference in pressure between the first contact pressure and the second contact pressure is out of a prescribed range.
