PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of a higher mode on a joining plane of waveguides of an optical semiconductor device. SOLUTION: The optical semiconductor device 100A, in which light having a wavelength of 1.25μm or greater is waveguided, includes: a first waveguide 32 of embedded type that is lattice-matched with InP, and includes a semiconductor device having a width equal to or greater than 1.50μm; a second waveguide 34 of embedded type that is lattice-matched with InP and narrower than the first waveguide, and includes another semiconductor device having a refractive index different from that of the first waveguide; and an intermediate waveguide portion 70 of embedded type that has a structure decreasing in width from the first waveguide 32 toward the second waveguide 34 and also includes the joining plane on which the first waveguide and the second waveguide are joined in a region having a width equal to or less than 1.35μm.
