The method involves connecting non-network-enabled transducers with a communication unit (109), and deriving a network identification from identification data of the non-network-enabled transducers. The network identification is assigned to the transducers by the communication unit, where the transducers are communicated with a communication network over the communication unit. Data for the transducers is sent and received using the assigned network identification by the communication unit. The network identification is an internet protocol (IP) address or a media access control address (MAC). An independent claim is also included for a communication unit comprising a transducer interface for connecting non-network-enabled transducers.
