The device has a holding device (102) for transmitting force (F) acting on a vehicle by side impacts to two coupling units (104, 106). One of the coupling units couples the holding device and a vehicle seat (108) such that the vehicle seat is shifted from a normal position to an interior part of the vehicle by the force. Another coupling unit couples the holding device and an absorber element (120) such that the force is absorbed by the absorber element when the vehicle seat is located in the normal position. An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting a passenger during side impact.
